This book is the best introductory to intermediate statistics textbook currently available. The authors do an excellent job of explaining how to go about doing statistics. The example problems are throughly worked out for the beginning student. All the steps needed to solve the various kinds of problems that a student will encounter in a statistics course are included. The notation used in the formulas is clear and straightforward. The treatment of p-values and multiple regression analysis is the best exposition to be found among current introductory/intermediate texts .I have taught 4-5,000 students statistics at the introductory, intermediate, and graduate level.I highly recommend this book for anyone taking an introductory to intermediate level course in statistics.

This book is a perennial best seller owing to its comprehensive coverage of statistical tools and methods delivered in a student friendly, step-by-step format. The text is non-threatening and presents concepts clearly and succinctly with a conversational writing style. All statistical concepts are illustrated with solved applied examples immediately upon introduction. Modern computing tools and applications are introduced, but the text maintains a focus on presenting statistics concepts as applied in business as opposed to technology or programming methods. This edition continues as a students' text with increased emphasis on interpretation of data and results.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems: Computing and Modeling, Workbook Review

Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems: Computing and Modeling, Workbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has several problems.
1. There are numerous typos in the text as well as in the solutions printed in the back of the book (and in the solutions manual). It can be very frustrating to puzzle over a problem for a long time only to find you were right and the book was wrong.
2. Several important techniques are only explained as short paragraphs in the exercise section (ie Euler Equation substitution, Reduction of Order, and others). You are left to try and figure out how to apply the vague instructions by looking at the solutions manual or asking someone else. I found this to be the biggest problem with the book.
3. The end of each example or concept is marked by a small red box in the margin of the page. These boxes are easy to miss so the distinction between example and theory, as well as between different aspects of the theory will become blurred unless you pay close attention to when the red boxes appear. Consequently results derived from theory and results derived from specific examples tend to blend together.
4. Often the authors add length to problems by providing the given values in non-SI units and the constants of nature in SI units. While this isn't a serious problem with the book, it would make the book needlessly annoying if you were using it for self study.
For the class that required this book I ended up checking out a different textbook on differential equations from the library to learn from. I only used this one for the questions we were assigned. If you have any choice in the matter I would recommend getting a different book.

This practical book reflects the new technological emphasis that permeates differential equations, including the wide availability of scientific computing environments like Maple, Mathematica, and MATLAB; it does not concentrate on traditional manual methods but rather on new computer-based methods that lead to a wider range of more realistic applications. The book starts and ends with discussions of mathematical modeling of real-world phenomena, evident in figures, examples, problems, and applications throughout the book. For mathematicians and those in the field of computer science.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Principles of Modern Chemistry Review

Principles of Modern Chemistry
Average Reviews:

This book is not as approachable as many general chemistry books; as a previous reviewer has noted, this book is written by physical chemists and the organization and presentation of the concepts in the text reflects this. As a physical chemist, I generally like this text; however, I acknowledge that it's not for everyone and I do have a few critiques.
Students who are not mathematically-inclined will have a hard time with this text: the thermodynamics section, the derivation of the kinetic theory of gases, and some of the derivations of the quantum mechanics material are intimidating! However, students with a firm grounding in math and physics will get much more out of this text than they will out of other standard general chemistry texts like Brown and LeMay (Chemistry The Central Science Tenth Edition).
I would strongly recommend this book for students who have an interest in math and physics or who have already taken an introductory chemistry course and want to understand the phenomena described at a more detailed level. For AP Chemistry or for students who haven't taken intro physics or intro calculus, I would instead recommend the Brown and LeMay book. I feel that its coverage of some of the topics is a bit more superficial, but it is more approachable for students taking chemistry for the first time.
One last note: I dislike the newest edition of this book because they authors reorganized the chapters into a "quantum first" presentation (quantum mechanics is introduced in chapter 4 rather than chapter 15 as it was in the 5th edition). While this organization is suitable for some full-out physical chemistry courses, it is not appropriate for this book. If this book is to be used as a general chemistry book, consider doing the chapters out of order: start with the history of chemistry chapters, skip to the thermo stuff, and come back to quantum later. It's much easier to grasp intuitively if you work from the macro to the micro and not the other way around.

Using images as primary historical evidence, Visions of America brings history alive for a generation of visual learners–and shows how conflicting visions of America have shaped our nation's past.Visions of America recognizes the value of using images to engage students in serious inquiry about the historical development of the United States. Visual images are critical primary sources, and using them effectively requires the development of key analytic skills. This new textbook revolutionizes the role of images in the history survey by integrating them into the narrative. The visual legacy of the nation's past also provides insight into the competing visions of America that have shaped American political culture. Visions of America explores the tensions and conflicts that have marked virtually every chapter of American history. It presents history as a dynamic, unpredictable, and dramatic process shaped by the choices made by people of all classes

Technology in Action Complete Review

Technology in Action Complete

There are many books that could be used in the introduction to computers level of classes. They tend to be very similar, in topics, order and structure. While this book is more of the same, there is one feature that stands out, the coverage of ethics in the context of computing. Ethics and the proper usage of computers is a significant aspect of the computing culture for all of us, but it is more significant for the college student. The advent of the Internet has made it much easier to obtain information and harder to filter it for accuracy. It is now much easier to plagiarize; all you have to do is copy and paste. Fortunately, it is also easier for instructors to identify an act of plagiarism; there are websites that will do it for you. The digitization of music makes it easy to download and play music on MP3 players. This list could continue for some time.
There are several places in the book where ethical principles are related to the topic. It is to the credit of the authors that this coverage is not just a spouting of facts; the questions are designed to have the students think about the situation and reach their own ethical conclusions.
This book is superior to the companion introductory volume with the same name. It contains more material than the introductory volume and all other things being equal I prefer to skip rather to supplement.
It is most unlikely that I will ever teach an introductory course in computing again. However, if I was to do so, I would take a hard look at this book, it is suitable for the course and I would most certainly adopt it.

English Grammar: Language As Human Behavior Review

English Grammar: Language As Human Behavior
Average Reviews:

In 2005-2006 I taught a grammar class both semesters at a university. The class was made up of English majors (and people from other disciplines) who wanted to improve their writing and pre-service ESL teachers who needed to know about the structure of English. Due to the high cost of this book I undertook a search to find if there was any other book out there I'd rather that my students have. I didn't find one. This book is the best combination of the prescriptive and descriptive grammar I wanted that I was able to find.
If you are a linguist and you are looking purely for descriptive grammar, you could definitely start with this book, but you might want to go on to The Grammar Book (by Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman) or the Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English (by Biber, et al.)
If I were teaching a descriptive-grammar class at the undergraduate level, I might consider the Longman Student Grammar of Spoken and Written English.

This conversational, self-reflective guide helps readers understand the social judgments that accompany language use—making them feel they are active participants in shaping their language rather than passive victims of grammar rules that someone imposes on them. Supplementing traditional grammar terms with insights gained by modern linguistic analysis, it describes English as an instrument of communication, and lays the necessary groundwork for thinking about language so users can apply their knowledge of language in ways most useful to them. Explores the basics of English, beginning with a discussion of the development of a standard English language and the origins of our present day rules of English and attitudes towards usage; initiates the study of grammar, emphasizing the complex interaction between language rules and behavior; talks about how one approaches the study of the structure of a language; and finally, works from the lowest levels of grammatical organization to the highest—starting with an analysis of words and working up to the level of the sentence. Offers many different types of exercises that encourage readers to think, talk, and write about English in real-world contexts with increasing confidence and sophistication. For writers, communications professionals, and anyone interested in acquiring a better understanding of how the English language works. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

I had to purchase this book for my AUTOCAD class. We NEVER used it! It is an interesting book if you have time to look at it between all those AUTOCAD drawings and projects you're doing, however if you don't need it, I don't suggest getting it. The AUTOCAD 2011 book was a much better help, with better examples.

Writing for Conferences: A Handbook for Graduate Students and Faculty Review

Writing for Conferences: A Handbook for Graduate Students and Faculty
Average Reviews:

Writing for Conferences: A Handbook for Graduate Students and Faculty, is a "must have" text for any student or instructor who wishes to prepare and present a paper for conferences. The chapters include topics such as finding the "right" conference, preparing for presentation, and networking at the conference. Authors Leo Mallette and Clare Berger clearly fill a niche since there are few books which relate to this subject available. I would recommend this book highly to both graduate students and new faculty as an excellent reference guide to further publishing, career opportunities, and enhancing networking skills. This book was the required text for an MBA MIS class. The book is extremely rudimentary and bachelor-level. It doesn't really get into MIS until Chapter 11. It's more of a history book of technology.

O'Brien defines technology and then explains how companies use the technology to improve performance. Real world cases finalize the explanation.

General Chemistry With Student Technical Package Seventh Edition Review

General Chemistry With Student Technical Package Seventh Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was the assigned text for my first semester of college chemistry. During that one semester, I forced myself to read it without compromise, repulsive though it was.
In general, it seems that the author attempts to make up for their poor writing ability by using small examples of limited applicability to convey general ideas. This method should work well enough to prepare the reader for the relatively easy exercises that they will find at the end of each chapter, but it ultimately fails to prepare them for real-world problems.
Now I have heard that some students prefer examples to words, in which case they should look at this book. Yet for those of us who hope to fully understand the material after the exams are over, a more advanced book is necessary.

Chemistry (Cliffs AP) Review

Chemistry (Cliffs AP)
Average Reviews:

I could go off and brag about how well I did on the exam and then say it was all because of this or that. I'm going to skip that and get straight down to it. It is like a formula sheet. This book is great if you understand what the equations are for. If you don't, you might consider another book. Currently I haven't found a book that contains a better description of the labs, so if you haven't had much experience in the lab before the AP test you might need this book. (BTW question 5 on free response is a lab question. It draws the questions from one of the 22 labs you were suppose to do in the course. If your school is anything like mine you won't do more than 14 or 15.) But again it is a bookl that focuses on the equations, which is silly seeing how the multiple choice section doesn't allow you to use a calculator. (Most of the questions on my test in the m.c. were concept. Those that were calculations were basic and the equations needed were so simple you'd shoot yourself if you didn't know them.) Buy the book for the labs if you need that review, otherwise don't buy it at all. In case you're curious i got a 4 on the test (i followed the crowd). It's always that equilibrium problem that gets you!
