Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems: Computing and Modeling, Workbook Review

Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems: Computing and Modeling, Workbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has several problems.
1. There are numerous typos in the text as well as in the solutions printed in the back of the book (and in the solutions manual). It can be very frustrating to puzzle over a problem for a long time only to find you were right and the book was wrong.
2. Several important techniques are only explained as short paragraphs in the exercise section (ie Euler Equation substitution, Reduction of Order, and others). You are left to try and figure out how to apply the vague instructions by looking at the solutions manual or asking someone else. I found this to be the biggest problem with the book.
3. The end of each example or concept is marked by a small red box in the margin of the page. These boxes are easy to miss so the distinction between example and theory, as well as between different aspects of the theory will become blurred unless you pay close attention to when the red boxes appear. Consequently results derived from theory and results derived from specific examples tend to blend together.
4. Often the authors add length to problems by providing the given values in non-SI units and the constants of nature in SI units. While this isn't a serious problem with the book, it would make the book needlessly annoying if you were using it for self study.
For the class that required this book I ended up checking out a different textbook on differential equations from the library to learn from. I only used this one for the questions we were assigned. If you have any choice in the matter I would recommend getting a different book.

Using images as primary historical evidence, Visions of America brings history alive for a generation of visual learners–and shows how conflicting visions of America have shaped our nation's past.Visions of America recognizes the value of using images to engage students in serious inquiry about the historical development of the United States. Visual images are critical primary sources, and using them effectively requires the development of key analytic skills. This new textbook revolutionizes the role of images in the history survey by integrating them into the narrative. The visual legacy of the nation's past also provides insight into the competing visions of America that have shaped American political culture. Visions of America explores the tensions and conflicts that have marked virtually every chapter of American history. It presents history as a dynamic, unpredictable, and dramatic process shaped by the choices made by people of all classes

Teaching Science to Children: An Inquiry Approach Review

If you can ignore the poor grammar throughout the text, you will find countless activities for older elementary through high school students. The explanations for the outcomes are too complex for younger students. It would be helpful to have some examples of complete, inquiry-based science lesson plans in addition to the activities. Assessment is an afterthought in this text--extremely inadequate for diverse learners. A real snoozer for this early childhood ed student!

This text contains over 300 science teaching activities, each followed by a list of the scientific activities (measurement, recording, etc) that can be taught as part of the activity. Most of the activities can be presented as discrepant events, thus increasing student motivation and interest. This edition includes 35 additional activities and a new frontpiece called "Safety in the Classroom".

Barron's SAT Subject Test Math Level 1 Review

Barron's SAT Subject Test Math Level 1
Average Reviews:

This book contain valuable material that not only gives a student an idea of what exam is actually about but really helps to improve the score. It does not replace a regular textbook or a good teacher, but still can help a lot. It is better tool for preparation to the math part of SAT then any general "all-in-one" SAT preparation book.
The book contains 18 chapters which cover most topics well and three model tests. Those tests are very important preparation tools and are well worth the money.
Chapter 2: "Tactics" is a really valuable chapter. It covers eight very useful approaches to solving SAP math problems. Exercises (with solutions) are good and as far as I can tell are pretty realistic. Three model tests are the real strong point of the book. Each of them is worth the price of the book alone.
Shortcomings are few. IMHO ideas of chapter 2 are not sufficiently reinforced in other chapters. The geometry section can (and should) be enlarged as this topic usually creates for student the most problems.
Also topics are treated as isolated without pointing to bridges between them (for example between trigonometry and geometrical problems).
Some neat tricks possible because a graphic calculator is allowed on the test (and it is IMHO a must ) are not covered. This is an area that needs another book and a lot of dedicated self-study as few high schools use it. Usage of HP graphic calculator can improve your results considerably. But the problem is that you need to master it. Other things equal it is better to use the calculator that you know well and get used to.
Highly recommended as an additional book to a good "all-in-one" SAT preparation book because math part of the test is the most important and most difficult part of SAT test. It can help to improve the score and at the same time save the family some money if (and only if) the student has adequate motivation to study himself/herself.

Trigonometry Review

This book is not highly concentrated in trigonometry, but it contains lots of topics on conics mathematics which will prepare students for calculas. I think some of the solutions could have been easier to follow. however,i would rather study this book than any other trig book to prepare for calculas.i think no other trig book will help you prepare for calculas the way this one does. About over half of the book deals with conics mathematics and advanced algebra which is what you need to prepare for calculas.
On the other hand,Analytic Trigonometry (By Barnett) is the best trigonometry textbook in the world, but it will not help you to transition into calculas. Trigonometry (By James Stewart) will be your best option for calculas preparation.
I also recommend Algebra and Trigonometry (Right Triangle)By Bittinger and Beecher, along with its students solutions manual. The solutions manual contains solutions for the odd numbered problems, and answers for the others. You really don't need solutions to all of them because most of the problems are alike anyways. This is also the best algebra and trig text in the world. I have all of these texts. James Stewart's Trigonometry will be even better with a private tutor.
In conclusion, the best books that will help you to prepare for calculas is algebra and trigonometry(Right Triangle) and trigonometry (By James Stewart).
Moreover,i've never seen any bad reviews for algebra and trigonometry(Right Triangle). All five stars for this book.Algebra and Trigonometry (Right Triangle)By Bittinger and Beecher.2nd Edition, 1993 version

Since my son started using BeeStar online math, he often asks questions about math problems. They are more and more challenging to me. This book came in as a big help. Its friendly question and answer format makes it very easy to use. The answers are insightful and presented in an elegant and simple manner that makes otherwise hard-to-explain concepts easy. It not only teaches the conventional math, but also gives you the context and the thoughts behind the principles. My son's math sense is improved significantly since I used this invaluable book. We love it.

I really liked this book (how could I not with such a huge increase in my score). It's very easy to use, and you can practice a lot of math in a very little amount of time. I hadn't done algebra since freshman year of high school and needed some serious review for the GRE. This book was a big help in boosting my score. I also used the Kaplan and Princeton Review books, but this one had the best/easiest/most-intense math review. It is also incredibly cheap. Fair warning: there are a lot of practice problem sets in this book, and it took me a good month to work through it all, but it was worth it.

Editors must've been napping on this one. The book is full of errors, typos, and many of the answers to the questions are placed incorrectly resulting in an absolutely frustrating experience for someone who is probably already suffering anxiety at having to take the SAT II to begin with. (I know it was for me). I suggest you buy a similar book from another publisher. Their editors messed up. When trying to take practice tests and determine how I'd do on the SAT II, I was confronted with answers for questions all jumbled, making me (at first glance) believe that I had repeatedly failed the practice exam and giving me no hope for the real test. (You can surely imagine how frustrating this was after all of the studying I had been doing!) Many questions also did not have supporting information in the review part, so there was no way to go back and look up something you might not understand and need to review again. Some of the answers given in the answer key were not backed up by the explanations and some of the explanations contradicted themselves so you kind of didn't really know if your answer was right or not, which doesn't help much. Please note that I'm an honors student with a very high average so it's not like I'm whining and just trying to blame the publishers. I just think that it's important for the book to HELP you study for the SAT II, not CONFUSE you. In short: this book helped only slightly, and I would NOT recommend it to anyone.

College Mathematics: 2009 Update Review

College Mathematics: 2009 Update
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pearson makes MyMathLab and related products confusing on purpose. As if it's not already hard enough for most people to understand, they have to go and add "MyMathLab" to the TITLE of a textbook! This "review" is to help all of you understand the difference between the two different listings and ISBN#s for this hardcover textbook.
So, what is the difference? One listing is for the hardcover textbook AND a Mymathlab student access kit, and the other is for JUST the hardcover textbook. That's it. That's the ONLY difference besides price.

Here is a little bit of information for all of you, to keep in mind for any future purchases of Pearson math textbooks:
When Pearson publishes a textbook, it is assigned an ISBN#. When they create a "value package", also know as a "bundle", they will create a DIFFERENT ISBN#, JUST for THAT particular bundle! Usually, there are several different bundles created for each textbook. (Book+mymathlab; book+student's solutions manual; book+student solution manual+mymathlab; book+CD lectures, etc.) When you are given an ISBN# by your college or professor, PAY ATTENTION to what it is that you are supposed to get. ASK your professor if you can. Sometime the colleges list the supplements as required, but the professor says they are optional. You can always go to Pearson's website (google mypearsonstore), punch in the ISBN#, and it will tell you exactly what you should be getting.
I'll go over this again using this book as an example. One listing is ISBN# 9780135024331 (dashes are such a waste of time). This is the ISBN# for the TEXTBOOK. I know the title doesn't say anything about a supplement, but it used to a few months ago - Amazon finally changed it. The title of some Amazon listings CAN have mistakes in them, ESPECIALLY for a bundle listing!
The other listing is ISBN# 9780136065418. This is for the textbook AND a mymathlab student access kit. Notice how the title reflects that. Now some of you think that the book in this listing should have an ISBN# of 9780136065418. WRONG! The book is ALWAYS THE SAME ISBN# (except on rare occasions which does not apply here and is for a discussion some other time). So, if you were to buy this NEW, you SHOULD receive the book with an ISBN# of 9780135024331 AND an access kit, either glued inside the front cover, or with its own ISBN# (there are several different access kit ISBN#'s, but they all do the same thing - and I am ONLY talking about mymathlab powered by CourseCompass here). So, what product has the ISBN# of 9780136065418? There isn't any! When Pearson bundles the different items together, they place a STICKER on the outside of the shrink-wrap with the bundle ISBN#. THAT IS THE ONLY PLACE THE ISBN# ACTUALLY APPEARS! SOMETIMES,the person that opens the shrink wrap will remove the sticker from the shrink-wrap and place it over the ISBN# of the book, but this certainly doesn't always happen. Often, the sticker and ISBN# is thrown out with the shrinkwrap.
So, ISBN# 9780136065418 JUST represents the book AND the mathlab. There is NOT just one physical item with that #, unless a person does as I mentioned above. Even with a bundle ISBN# sticker on the book, however, that does not make it okay to sell "the textbook only" as a BUNDLE. At least in my opinion it's not!
*** IMPORTANT: When buying a used book, NEVER assume that the original supplements are included! This applies to ALL textbooks. Many sellers disclose that now, especially the book resellers (you know the ones with the same standard description for every single one of their books), but there are just as many who do not. Sometimes the omission is intentional, but usually it's an honest misunderstanding of what a listing should actually come with - the seller didn't know the difference between these two listings either, just like (most of) you didn't before now. PLEASE BE AWARE, this can also sometimes be the case for a "new" book being sold from a seller other than Amazon (all of Amazon's "new" books and bundles really are new - just as the publisher sent them) Since you never know when this might be the case, you should always COMMUNICATE with the seller if their description isn't clear - ask questions by sending them a message!
If you have questions, feel free to leave a comment here - I will then get an email notification that you did, and will try to respond as quickly as possible.
I hate to see us college students ripped off, and that is all that the publishers, college bookstores, some professors, and most of the big book re-sellers care about doing - putting OUR money in THEIR pocket! I wish EVERY student would follow this suggestion:
STUDENTS, SUPPORT EACH OTHER!! Buy your books from a fellow STUDENT, NOT one of the big textbook re-sellers'

I recently brought this book as a means to review for the math level 2 subject test. I usually use princeton review but decided to give kaplan a shot this time. However I was somewhat disappointed with the excess of mistakes in this book; (ex. x-3=0 ---> x=4). It's not horrible but it does get on my nerves, especially when there's a mistake or typo every few pages. Overall the book is decent, it gives you key facts you need to know and shows some examples but definitely doesn't go into enough depth for some topics. The explanations for the some of the examples are written poorly and the topic on matrix which I've heard could be on the test is left out.
