Principles of Modern Chemistry Review

Principles of Modern Chemistry

This book is not as approachable as many general chemistry books; as a previous reviewer has noted, this book is written by physical chemists and the organization and presentation of the concepts in the text reflects this. As a physical chemist, I generally like this text; however, I acknowledge that it's not for everyone and I do have a few critiques.
Students who are not mathematically-inclined will have a hard time with this text: the thermodynamics section, the derivation of the kinetic theory of gases, and some of the derivations of the quantum mechanics material are intimidating! However, students with a firm grounding in math and physics will get much more out of this text than they will out of other standard general chemistry texts like Brown and LeMay (Chemistry The Central Science Tenth Edition).
I would strongly recommend this book for students who have an interest in math and physics or who have already taken an introductory chemistry course and want to understand the phenomena described at a more detailed level. For AP Chemistry or for students who haven't taken intro physics or intro calculus, I would instead recommend the Brown and LeMay book. I feel that its coverage of some of the topics is a bit more superficial, but it is more approachable for students taking chemistry for the first time.
One last note: I dislike the newest edition of this book because they authors reorganized the chapters into a "quantum first" presentation (quantum mechanics is introduced in chapter 4 rather than chapter 15 as it was in the 5th edition). While this organization is suitable for some full-out physical chemistry courses, it is not appropriate for this book. If this book is to be used as a general chemistry book, consider doing the chapters out of order: start with the history of chemistry chapters, skip to the thermo stuff, and come back to quantum later. It's much easier to grasp intuitively if you work from the macro to the micro and not the other way around.

The Mechanical Design Process (Schaums Outline Series in Mechanical Engineering Series) Review

The Mechanical Design Process (Schaums Outline Series in Mechanical Engineering Series)
Average Reviews:

Ullman provides an easy to understand text on an extremely detailed subject matter. I used it in a sophomore design class to get an overview of the mechanical design process and will use it again for senior capstone design. The text starts off using techniques/tools we're already familiar with and segways into more detailed and specific methods of concept development. The bicycle example does a great job of showing a designer's thought process and is a good inclusion to the book. Also, it helps that Ullman knows how to get to the point.
However, some of the charts are difficult to grasp, and the material on cost and marketing are a bit dull. Although, that's probably due to the subject and not the author.

Barron's SAT Subject Test Chemistry Review

Barron's SAT Subject Test Chemistry

I took the chem SAT after using this book and got a 740, which isn't bad. This book has a great review of the simple things, however, the end of the book goes waaaaaay too far into detail. The electrochem and nucleonics chapters are in so much detail, that you could spend hours and hours studying every tiny thing, when almost nothing show up on the test in those chapters. After learning Ox-Redox and Organic, you should spend the vast majority of your time in the first 8-9 chapters. Pay particular attention to the areas on solutions, acids and bases, and molarity/molality concentrations. Just be careful where you spend your time with this book.

I am a high school student, and I purchased this book in the hopes of learning about Chemistry for my subject test, I take as of now Regents Chemistry, which is the standard curriculum in New York State. I figured I had learned enough general regents Chemistry that anything inside this book would prove no great struggle. I was wrong, the language was sort of difficult and slightly abstract to understand, by no means was it incomprehensible, but for someone learning the language and voice as it moved from point to point and lesson to lesson was not strong enough. Now I enjoy Chemistry, otherwise I doubt I would be taking the test, it took me nearly one and a half hours to grasp the first atomic structure in regards to quantum numbers and etc. Now I learn quickly, and I take other advanced placement courses, it was not the wording that was difficult. I looked back and found that there were not enough diagrams, not even one for Bohr's model of the Hydrogen atom, which is difficult enough to learn spin quantum numbers and etc, without a diagram it becomes extremely so. The directions are also not that clear, which I struggled with, I would have to reread sentences to comprehend it. I switched to SparkNotes Chemistry review and I learned remarkably fast, I understood everything clearly, the worst thing about the book are the teaching directions and also the diagrams which should be explained. I am now learning Chemistry from Sparknotes, by all means a very good review book if you can understand concepts and need review. But if you need help with concepts look to Sparknotes.
Pros:
-Great review book
-Detailed explanation
-lesson plans are easily organized and cover everything
-Review and practice tests for each chapter
Cons:
-Writing is difficult if you're learning
-Not a learning book, a review book
-Don't buy this book if you want to learn Chemistry, buy it if you want to review stuff you already know
-Chances are, if you get this book you're an AP Chem student for example, because regular high school curriculums do not cover sigma and pi bonds, spin quantum numbers, electron affinity and much more
Bottom Line: Great review book, if the concepts are familiar to you and your high school Chemistry Course goes above and beyond what is required for a high school final/exam. Don't expect this is a self-teaching book, use it as a reference or a review book if you already know the material. Chances are again the only people who would know beyond the average high school course of Chemistry are AP Chem students, if you're trying to learn new Chemistry, go to sparknotes.

This book covers all aspects of writing a thesis or dissertation. The author is an experienced scientist and her PhD students are reknowned for their well written work. There are even tips on those lessons at school that you always fell asleep in - grammar! I don't know how I would ever have got through things without this book. An ironic sense of humour makes it all most readable.

Barron's AP Chemistry Flash Cards (Barron's: the Leader in Test Preparation) Review

Barron's AP Chemistry Flash Cards (Barron's: the Leader in Test Preparation)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I teach A.P. Chemistry and I have been purchasing various review guides and tools. These flashcards are a waste of money. Most of them are just definitions. For example: what is the meaning of stoichiometry? Or what is the formula for ammonium nitrate? What I was hoping for were some flashcards that would help with practicing chemical reactions. You would be better off making 20 or 30 of your own flashcards for the A.P. test. If any A.P. student cannot identify the name for a beaker, or buret, you shouldn't bother taking the test anyway! Make no mistake there are a few good cards here, but probably less than 20 out of 500.

General Chemistry With Student Technical Package Seventh Edition Review

General Chemistry With Student Technical Package Seventh Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was the assigned text for my first semester of college chemistry. During that one semester, I forced myself to read it without compromise, repulsive though it was.
In general, it seems that the author attempts to make up for their poor writing ability by using small examples of limited applicability to convey general ideas. This method should work well enough to prepare the reader for the relatively easy exercises that they will find at the end of each chapter, but it ultimately fails to prepare them for real-world problems.
Now I have heard that some students prefer examples to words, in which case they should look at this book. Yet for those of us who hope to fully understand the material after the exams are over, a more advanced book is necessary.

CliffsAP Biology Review

I used this book and Dr. Sanghera's AP Biology Flashcard Quicklet to prepare for the AP Biology exam. I love both of these books and here are my reviews:
This book is cool. It's to the point and covers all the topics very concisely. So, that saves you lot of time that you can use elsewhere. However, it gives you all the info that you need to pass the AP Biology exam. It's short and sweet: material is covered in a reader-friendly way; easy to follow, understand, and retain. I used this book in combination with the following book: the Flashcard Quicklet.
AP Biology Flashcard Quicklet: Flashcards in a Book for Biology StudentsFlash cards are cool tools to review your preparation for the exam. I like this style of flash cards though: flash cards in a book. Loose flash cards could be annoying; they are hard to keep together...flash cards in a book are cool..no lost cards...easy to keep them together..Besides, in this book, the flash cards are very much self contained; good and easy to follow answers and explanations....You can use this flash card book with any AP Biology book or without any book...it's not tied to a specific book...The coverage of topics is quite comprehensive and there is lots of space to make your own notes...I love it...
I would say these are the only two books you need to pass the exam.

Chemistry (Cliffs AP) Review

Chemistry (Cliffs AP)

I could go off and brag about how well I did on the exam and then say it was all because of this or that. I'm going to skip that and get straight down to it. It is like a formula sheet. This book is great if you understand what the equations are for. If you don't, you might consider another book. Currently I haven't found a book that contains a better description of the labs, so if you haven't had much experience in the lab before the AP test you might need this book. (BTW question 5 on free response is a lab question. It draws the questions from one of the 22 labs you were suppose to do in the course. If your school is anything like mine you won't do more than 14 or 15.) But again it is a bookl that focuses on the equations, which is silly seeing how the multiple choice section doesn't allow you to use a calculator. (Most of the questions on my test in the m.c. were concept. Those that were calculations were basic and the equations needed were so simple you'd shoot yourself if you didn't know them.) Buy the book for the labs if you need that review, otherwise don't buy it at all. In case you're curious i got a 4 on the test (i followed the crowd). It's always that equilibrium problem that gets you!
