(More customer reviews)A plethora of books exist which discuss the techniques of theatrical makeup; Corson's work is undeniably the best of them all.The first edition, published in the early 1940s, set the theatrical world on its ear. No more were performers advised that a faux wrinkle was effectively portrayed by a pencil line or that the physical characteristics of standard theatrical types--butler, old maid, Irishman, and so forth--were simple matters of formula.The book would be a must-have if it explained only technique; it is its insistence that every character is unique and the product of any number of internal and external influences that makes it superb--and the one essential volume for every actor's personal library. Highly recommended

(More customer reviews)Working backstage? Asked by your local community theatre to pitch in doing props? Foolishly said, "Of course I can build a tree(Silly fool only God can)! Here are the helpful hints and clues that will point you in the right direction without looking like a total fool. Design, construction, lights and sound- Oren Parker has it all. This latest edition is my third copy! They just keep getting better and better. This "rumor" best explains the abilities of one of the authors. A colleague once related the story in which Oren Parker showed up in the university scene shop in a three piece suit, painted a full back drop and walked out without a drop of paint on the suit. I'd be interested in knowing how true this is but not any less impressed with how informative this book has been for me. Well worth the exorbitant price.

(More customer reviews)At last--a makeup book that doesn't aspire to be the encyclopedic end-all; instead, it teaches techniques that all theatre students should master for the roles they play most often. The full-color photos are second to none, and Thudium's recommendations for makeup products that are kind to young actors' faces -- such as Mehron's wonderful Celebre line -- make this an ideal text for advanced high school students as well as for those attending colleges and universities. I've always been a Corson devotee, but this excellent source has convinced me that, while Corson's book should be available for reference, Thudium's book should be number one on the high school, college, or university instructor's list.
