Stage Makeup (9th Edition) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)A plethora of books exist which discuss the techniques of theatrical makeup; Corson's work is undeniably the best of them all.The first edition, published in the early 1940s, set the theatrical world on its ear. No more were performers advised that a faux wrinkle was effectively portrayed by a pencil line or that the physical characteristics of standard theatrical types--butler, old maid, Irishman, and so forth--were simple matters of formula. The book would be a must-have if it explained only technique; it is its insistence that every character is unique and the product of any number of internal and external influences that makes it superb--and the one essential volume for every actor's personal library. Highly recommended

Scene Design and Stage Lighting Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Working backstage? Asked by your local community theatre to pitch in doing props? Foolishly said, "Of course I can build a tree(Silly fool only God can)! Here are the helpful hints and clues that will point you in the right direction without looking like a total fool. Design, construction, lights and sound- Oren Parker has it all. This latest edition is my third copy! They just keep getting better and better. This "rumor" best explains the abilities of one of the authors. A colleague once related the story in which Oren Parker showed up in the university scene shop in a three piece suit, painted a full back drop and walked out without a drop of paint on the suit. I'd be interested in knowing how true this is but not any less impressed with how informative this book has been for me. Well worth the exorbitant price.

Stage Makeup: The Actor's Complete Guide to Today's Techniques and Materials (Watson Guptill Famous Artists) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)At last--a makeup book that doesn't aspire to be the encyclopedic end-all; instead, it teaches techniques that all theatre students should master for the roles they play most often. The full-color photos are second to none, and Thudium's recommendations for makeup products that are kind to young actors' faces -- such as Mehron's wonderful Celebre line -- make this an ideal text for advanced high school students as well as for those attending colleges and universities. I've always been a Corson devotee, but this excellent source has convinced me that, while Corson's book should be available for reference, Thudium's book should be number one on the high school, college, or university instructor's list.

The Perfect Stage Crew: The Compleat Technical Guide for High School, College, and Community Theater Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I purchased The Perfect Stage Crew after taking over the Theatre Arts class and role as Technical Director at the high school where I teach. I had little theater experience and no technical knowledge when I accepted both positions. Prior to purchasing this text, I had read numerous reviews and purchased other texts, none of which addressed the specific issues I was encountering on a daily basis - such as basic stagecraft, simple (but effective) lighting, tips for managing a crew and tricks for maintaining my sanity. The text reads easily and is well organized. Mr. Kaluta has a priceless sense of humor, and I would swear he's been backstage in my theater! I feel confident in following his advice and learning from his mistakes because he's been where I am. I have even moved away from the "textbook" for my course and started creating notes and handouts gleaned from the pointers and information in The Perfect Stage Crew. Thank you so much for writing a book on technical theater that doesn't read like an instructional manual for a vacuum cleaner and that makes me laugh out loud while nodding in agreement. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone working in high school or community theatre. It has proven invaluable to me, and I expect to return to it often over the next several years.
