I used a version of this text when I attended MATC in the mid-80's. The book was covered 1 chapter per day. When the student entered class, they immediately picked up a quiz and proceded to a high-sided lecturn to complete it. Upon completion, the student brought the quiz to the front of the room, where an instructor graded it in front of you, and passed or failed you on the spot. Any incorrect answer was a failure. You were sent back to your seat to attempt to correct your error(s). On re-grading, if you were still in error on any of the problems on the quiz, the instructor would try to help you understand your mistakes. Satisfied that you now understood the previous day's lesson, you were returned to your seat to begin the next day's assignment. The chapters contained minimal text, and were mostly problems or equations to be solved. The completely worked out solutions were printed on the right side of the page. You covered the solutions, worked out the problem, and then compared your worked out solution to the author's solution to see if they matched. If not, you could review the author's solution step-by-step to see where you went wrong. And the author's answers were ALWAYS correct...
Very effective. I learned math faster, and had more understanding using this method, in one semester than I got from all of the Algebra I took in high school. Can be used effectively without the quizes and tests if the student is motivated.
