Barron's SAT Subject Test Math Level 2 Review

Barron's SAT Subject Test Math Level 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Other reviewers have hinted at it, and I'll go ahead and state it explicitly: this book is overkill. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. The book provides a very detailed review of the math on the test, and the practice tests are far more difficult and involved than the actual test.
If you're looking for a good score on the Math Level 2 Subject Test, you don't need this book. The review is too detailed and the tests are too demanding. If you're looking for an 800, though, this is exactly the book you'll want. It prepares you for the one or two questions on the test that most test-takers won't even attempt, the one or two questions that could be the difference between a 790 and an 800. You'll cover things, like the latus rectum of a hyperbola, that probably won't show up on the test, but you'll be ready if they do.
The real strength of this book is in its solutions. It provides detailed solutions to each example problem and each problem on the practice tests. I found it very helpful to read through these solutions for every problem, even those I got right. In several cases, I found that the authors used a faster and more efficient technique. The book really emphasizes these techniques as a way to increase both speed and accuracy. In particular, it places heavy emphasis on leveraging the graphing calculator to solve problems.
I've come to expect that a test prep book will give a basic review of material, some generic "tips" (make educated guesses, use the process of elimination, etc.), and provide a couple of practice tests. This book goes far beyond that with a detailed and comprehensive review, clever techniques and methods that are actually helpful, and six challenging (but in the style of the subject test) practice tests with detailed solutions.
If you want the 800 and you're willing to put in the effort, this book is the way to go.

Writing for the Technical Professions (3rd Edition) Review

Writing for the Technical Professions (3rd Edition)
Average Reviews:

This textbook shares some useful information, but at times I feel myself saying "well, duh - that's just commons sense." Some sections feel a bit wordy and cluttered. I thinks it's pretty comical that the first sections of the book talk about organizing your ideas before you begin writing, but some places in the book seem so disorganized. Overall though, I'm learning what I need to know from the book to be able to pass my class and feel that some of the information will come in handy throughout my future career.

The Handbook of Technical Writing, Seventh Edition Review

The Handbook of Technical Writing, Seventh Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a technical writer, I've found this book to be just that. While it definitely is not a "how to write technical manuals" type of book, the topics and material covered make it well worth having on any writer's bookshelf. And in this latest edition, not only have the editors done another great job, the book's page layout is wonderful. In previous editions, all text and type was in black. In this edition, headings, paragraph titles and diagrams are framed in blue. This seemingly minor change makes the book's material easier to read and refer to.
The book continues to have extensive information about writing-related topics. Everything from proper grammar, to writing reports, to interviewing subject matter experts, how to do Internet research for a writing project, writing newsletters and/or abstracts, interviewing for a job and interviewing a subject matter expert for more information about a subject, writing proposals, and so forth is covered in this book. There's even a companion web site to the book that provides links to online resources for further information.
The book's preface contains what the editors consider their "Five Steps to Successful Writing," and also a "Checklist of the Writing Process," complete with subsections containing listings for (in order) Preparation, Research, Organization, Writing a Draft, and Revision. In fact, a few of the book's numerous entries contain their own "writer's checklist" of things to do. Some subjects have not only a heading, but cross-references to other pages of related topics. For example, if I was interested in learning how to write a proposal, I could go to that listing, and also find reference information on internal and external proposals. There seems to be at times an endless wealth of information about whatever writing topic you are looking for. This book's main strength obviously is how all the book's material is organized.
This is one book every writer should have. Even though it isn't a "how-to-write" book, it's still a "tools for writing" book. I find myself referring to it often when I'm
working on any kind of writing project.
As with past editions, the book's editors have done a wonderful job with this handbook.

The seventh edition of this classic comprehensive reference is now easier to use and more thorough than ever. With up-to-date coverage of workplace technology—from e-mail, Internet research, and writing for the Web to Web forms and page design—the Handbook of Technical Writing offers expert advice for meeting the demands of online writing. Abundant "real world" examples and sample documents throughout the text provide models for effective technical communication. The book's new "five-way access" structure—the alphabetical organization, topical key to the alphabetical entries, checklist of the writing process, comprehensive index, and new topical list of figures and model documents—provides even more ways of retrieving information, faster. This edition also includes new and revised entries on research, documenting sources, brochures, formal reports, newsletters, proposals, sales letters, presentations, and visuals. With entries that have been consolidated and streamlined, and in-depth treatment of grammar, usage, and the writing skills that both students and professionals need to master, the Handbook of Technical Writing remains both an accessible and easy-to-use guide, and the quick reference faithful users have come to appreciate.

Communicating Technical Information: A Guide for the Electronic Age Review

Communicating Technical Information: A Guide for the Electronic Age
Average Reviews:

This book is very useful for engineering students or practising engineers who wish to possess excellent technical communication/writing skills. It will put to shame any engineer who claims that scientific mind can't be expected to be too literate. It is so comprehensive, touching upon all aspects of technical writing, such as writing to different audiences, techniques of researching, writing, editing and even how to obtain the most visually pleasing layout for your technical reports. Not only that, it includes some essential information like formats of reports and bibliography. Another big plus is it includes recent writing techniques, like electronic documents. Although a very large chunk of the book deals with technical writing, the authors have also discussed Oral Presentation in one of the last few chapters. I am using this book in my university technical writing course this semester, and I must say that I have benefited tremendously. It's really a must for everyone who deals with presentation of technical information in their work / daily life. And in the case of engineers, doesn't that "everyone" include all of us?

Technical Drawing 101 with AutoCAD Review

Technical Drawing 101 with AutoCAD

I've made it a point to keep track of CAD manuals out there. True that there are many larger, more robust publishers, but none break it down like Doug and Antonio here in this book. It is a beginning book for CAD users. You want to know how to get things started, well you can follow right along with the chapters and get from understanding the user interface and workspaces all the way through to your first Mechanical, Architectural, Electrical, and 3D drawings.
I really like how things have been organized in the book and tips and shortcuts are made apparent. I've had no problems working with my students who use this book and they've all really learned a lot.
Understand that this book is a guided explanation of tools and concepts using AutoCAD and not only offers how to use tools, but also the concepts behind different design disciplines. Perfect for someone wanting an introduction to drafting.

My daughter's university was requiring this book, but at a $45 plus shipping price tag and only available through the publisher's website. When we found out she could use last year's book, it was a great way to save money. Though it came in from someone who went to the University of West Virginia, my daughter matched it up with her roommate's freshly purchased one from the website, and except for the cover and the binding, which is customized to each univerity, it was identical. When ever you can save $37 on a college text book that you'll be lucky if the bookstore will buy back, it is great!

SAT II: Chemistry (REA) -- The Best Test Prep for the SAT II (SAT PSAT ACT (College Admission) Prep)
Average Reviews:

Don't get me wrong. REA is an excellent AP History preparation book. But, when it comes to the SAT II Subject Tests, the REA books are nothing in comparison to Barrons and Kaplan. REA does not go into depth. The organization of the book is poorly put together. Unlike REA, Barrons starts off their book with the simple subject of matter. REA jumps to to top of the pyramid at the start of the book without even establishing a foundation. The discussion on matter and the periodic table is almost the last area reviewed. In general, the REA Chemistry book is vague. It lists out equations and then expects you to understand them without explanations. After taking the Chemistry SATs twice, I strongly suggest Barrons. The Barrons book definitely reflected my 790 score. If you buy Barrons, don't just think that you will automatically do great on the Chemistry SAT test. You're going to have to read.

Internship is common concept in various fields, but it need more elaboration to distinguish with a similar term "mentoring". Instead of convincing the reader to accept a vague term, this book definitely provides a framwork for exploring the theory and practice of internship. Either the articles or books written in academic tone are limited, this book is a good attempt.

Internships: Theory and Practice focuses on the history, theory, value, design, administration, and evaluation of professional internships as an educational experience for college students. Internships are guided, pre-professional experiences that combine academic and professional components as a managed transition to professional careers. Touted by many as an educational innovation for the 21st century, internships (or experiential learning, or apprenticeships, as they once were called) have been a staple of professional preparation for centuries, dating back at least to the earliest documentation in the Middle Ages and no doubt far beyond that. Charles Sides and Ann Mrvica trace this history through primary sources to explore the development of internship experiences over the past 800 years, create an introduction to the topic of internships, and provide a foundation for modern college-corporation partnerships in professional education and training. The authors present specific guidelines and discussions on issues important to corporations, in terms of providing for internship experiences; issues important to colleges, in terms of designing and evaluating internships; and issues important to students, in terms of participating in and learning from internships.

This book is small and great. I learned a great deal from this book, about grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization, among other things. This book, if studied and mastered, greatly improves one's techical writing technique.
The section on English as a second language leaves a bit to be desired, but I suppose it is understandable, since this book was written for native English speakers. Good book.

Technical Communication (10th Edition) Review

Technical Communication (10th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
John Lannon was a successful author of a college writing and composition textbook. He then created various spinoffs so that his publisher could cover more markets: business writing, technical writing, and so on (for both college and high school).

So he's really not a current specialist in technical writing, and he's not employed as a technical writer. He's just an English instructor who has been using essentially the same basic materials in all his books for decades.

This text is a perfect example. It has very little to do with today's field of technical communications. There are many other textbooks that have more specific and up-to-date examples and guidelines for contemporary technical writers. Any book by Hackos, for example, runs circles around this one.
In any case, he and his publisher don't need your single-copy sale. They sell thousands of these books for coursewide use at many schools across the country for use in very elementary courses. They don't care about individual users.
So save your money and buy something else!

Technical Drawing Review

Technical Drawing

This text was the basic drafting manual that I used during my technical education; its use did not end with school, however, since I refer to it frequently in my occupation. It tells everything that needs to be explained and described in the general drawing problems that might be encountered in industrial practice. It contains excellent descriptions and illustrations for: Drawing Threads, Fasteners & Springs Geometric Constructions Clear, Concise instructions in using Drafting Instruments, (before the time of Computer Aided Drafting & Desing, in any case). An Excellent overview of the Industrial Design & Development Process, (which I wish my supervisors would read). Sectional Drawing. This book is to drafting what Machinery's Handbook, of the Industrial Press, is to the metal working industries. There are a variety of Drafting Textbooks available, but none are incrementally better, let alone drasticaly better.
