(More customer reviews)I have used the Diana Hacker books since entering graduate school years ago. As a late re-entry into higher education, I had been schooled in footnotes, etc. Using this books kept me aware of the revised requirements for citation and formatting.
Unfortunately, many institutions of higher learning buy reference guides that are packaged with a textbook. They are very often outdated or difficult to use.
I refer my students to Hacker's website, and provide my copy for student use in the classroom.

(More customer reviews)I teach developmental writing and English 101 at a community college. I adopted this book after having used another book which represents itself as a comprehensive guide, The Norton Field Guide to Writing. I found the Norton Field Guide repetitious. It commits a sin all too many college texts commit today: it comes pre-highlighted. If instructors are supposed to lead their students to think critically, doesn't a text in which the main points are highlighted defeat that purpose by spoonfeeding the students and by not treating them as adults?
Furthermore, the addition of color doubles the price of a book. At $90+ per book, students deserve a break in the form of a black and white text.
A Writer's Reference contains everything a student in 101 needs to know in order to make the transition from high school writing to college writing. The tabs are a plus. All a student has to do is go to the MLA or APA tab to find how to cite and how to construct a bibliography. There is no need to "teach" these things: simply direct the students to the book.

Technical Communication (10th Edition) Review

(More customer reviews)John Lannon was a successful author of a college writing and composition textbook. He then created various spinoffs so that his publisher could cover more markets: business writing, technical writing, and so on (for both college and high school).

So he's really not a current specialist in technical writing, and he's not employed as a technical writer. He's just an English instructor who has been using essentially the same basic materials in all his books for decades.

This text is a perfect example. It has very little to do with today's field of technical communications. There are many other textbooks that have more specific and up-to-date examples and guidelines for contemporary technical writers. Any book by Hackos, for example, runs circles around this one.
In any case, he and his publisher don't need your single-copy sale. They sell thousands of these books for coursewide use at many schools across the country for use in very elementary courses. They don't care about individual users.
So save your money and buy something else!

(More customer reviews)Seller had the book shipped and delivered promptly; the day before I needed it. That was excellent timing considering I ordered it later than I should have.
My only problem with the book was the relatively high cost. This is attributed to its very recent publication date for this edition, though there is not much changed from the 8th or earlier editions. One will find the book to be somewhat useless once reading/attempting to learn from it; most articles inside are common sense or have nothing truly to do with Technical (science, engineering, math, etc) Writing but more with Business (marketing, sales pitches, stock exchange letters, useless etc) Writing.
However, the book is required for an Engineering technical writing course at a university/college, it is just a shame the book does not live up to its intended purpose. The layouts, drafts, and Intentions purposes of the book, as well as being a "stand alone MLA handbook" makes up for the fact that the author/university relation is a bit lacking.
This Seller however, did a superb job. 5 Stars all the way.
