Peterson's Graduate Programs in Engineering and Applied Sciences 2001 (Peterson's Graduate Programs in Engineering and Applied Sciences, 2001)

I thought the guide was well organized and easy to use. The book is divided into categories of engineering specialties. Then all graduate schools are listed in alphabetical order with a brief description of the school (address, degrees offered, students enrolled, faculty ratios, male/female ratios, degrees awarded, average tuition and financial aid, degree and entrance requirements, contact info). The best part was the fact that every school who offers a graduate program in the engineering area was listed in alphabetical order. The schools could also choose to pay for an in-depth description of the engineering school or of a specific program. The descriptions are handy, but since the school has to pay for them only about half of the schools I looked at had one. The only thing the guide was missing was an index by state within a certain program, so if you just want to look at in-state schools you have to skim through all of the listings. Overall, the guide worked for me. I got all the contact information I wanted in one afternoon, but have used the guide multiple times since then. This guide was great for deciding where to start when beginning to look at graduate schools.

Play Production Today Review

Play Production Today

I've read this and other books by Jonniepat Mobley. This book is simple, clear, concrete; it's a wonderfully practical, thoughtful book.
What I don't understand, though, is why (when the name of the author is clearly on the cover of the book), Amazon is listing this as being written by McGraw-Hill, the publishers. Don't authors deserve credit?

Laboratory Autoclaves, High Pressure and Hydrogenation Apparatus - Design & Construction Review

Laboratory Autoclaves, High Pressure and Hydrogenation Apparatus - Design and Construction
Average Reviews:

This book appears to be written in the 1940's although the title page says "Wexford College Press 2006".
Very disappointing: I mean who uses an open brick gas fired furnace to heat a labortatory autoclave now-a-days? And not to mention, no mention of magnetic drives for stirring......
nice drawings, but at least 30 years old.
Vintage. a classic. a disappointment.

Great guide, provides plentiful information about graduate programs in engineering. Convenient because it is broken up into engineering disciplines, so you don't need to sort through to find the programs that support your major/interest. Also, WAY cheaper than the newer versions but contains essentially the same information.

Design of Rare-Earth Permanent Magnets (REPM) and Magnetic Circuits Review

Design of Rare-Earth Permanent Magnets (REPM) and Magnetic Circuits
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is the report "A Permanent Magnet Circuit Design Primer" from ARMY RESEARCH LAB (hardcopy available through Storming Media) actually. Although officially classified as "Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited" by Defense Technical Information Center, I don't think changing the title and pretending a new book is a good practice.
I give 2 stars because Wesford still keeps the two authors' names. If it is changed or deleted, I will give 1 star instead.
I suggest everyone to buy the copy from Storming Media instead of Wexford to discourage such title-renaming practice.

The advent of rare-earth permanent magnets (REPMs) has brought the realization of novel magnetic structures that are not practicable otherwise. So different are these remarkable materials from the earlier magnets that conventional design wisdom is inadequate to fully exploit their unique characteristics. Indeed, the conventional wisdom can lead to error or to the employment of cumbersome procedures that are quite unnecessary for REPMs. The salutary characteristics stem from two basic attributes of the rare-earth materials: 1) large intrinsic moments per unit volume; 2) extraordinarily high resistance to demagnetization by external or internal demagnetization fields.Chapter titles are ...(1) Introduction ...(2) Magnetic Circuit Design [subsections are: Magnetic Analogue to Ohm's Law, Example of Magnetic Gap Field Calculations, Flux Confinement by Cladding, Clad Permanent Magnet Solenoids] ...(3) Linear Structures Composed Entirely of Rigid Permanent Magnets ...(4) Flux Confinement to Polygonal Cavities ...(5) Rod Ensembles ...(6) Three Dimensional Structures ...(7) Structural Simplification with Magnetic Mirrors ...(8) Periodic Permanent Magnet Stacks - PPM's [subsections are: Travelling Wave Tubes, Wigglers and Undulators, Twister Structures] ...(9) Conclusions, References, and Bibliography.

Exploring the Internet Review

Exploring the Internet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Exploring the Internet" (2nd Edition) begins with the seemingly obligatory Internet history, but differs from the mainstream introductory Internet books by concluding each of its chapters with a variety of tests and and hands-on tasks that challenge the reader's true understanding of the concepts rather than the reader's ability to simply memorize.
Sound like a text book? It is. I was introduced to the book through an introductory Web course that is part of a Master's Degree program at Nova Southeastern University's School of Computer and Information Science. The book is one of several in the Exploring Windows series from Prentice Hall publishers. Employing a "learning by doing" concept, each of the book's chapters concludes with a multiple choice test, an "Exploring the Internet" exercise, some World Wide Web practice sessions and "Case Studies" in which the reader is asked to put his new found knowlege to some practical online use.
One of the "problems" with the book is not of the book's design, but rather a result of the Web's rapid growth. Some of the sites and URLs used in the book simply are no longer around or operable. However, the authors are aware of the problem, address it on several occasions and present such clear directions that it's easy enough to find worthwhile substitute targets.
In short, the book is more than adquate in its introduction to the Internet and Web. There's plenty for the first time visitor and quite a few tips still left over for those who already possess a good understanding of the topic.

This book is by no means meant to be a primary text. It clearly states it is a review textbook to help prepare you for tests. This it does decently except that there are many simple mistakes that detract from its usefullness.
By no means am I a Mathematics expert, but this book has too many glaring errors. See Chapter 4 in particular, they even answer some of their own test questions wrong. For example problem #23 or pages 71-72, the graph is totally wrong I can tell with out using a calculator.
How dare someone release such a poorly checked text.

How to Be an Internet Stock Investor: Essential Guides to Today's Most Popular Investment Strategies Review

How to Be an Internet Stock Investor: Essential Guides to Today's Most Popular Investment Strategies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After a few spectacular boom-and-bust cycles it has become clear to most sensible observers that Internet stocks are real, and will be an essential part of the economy in the future, but also that many highly-touted stocks are terrible investments. The old accounting rules and valuation theories don't apply, but the new rules don't work any better. Companies founded and backed by people who were yesterday's success stories end up tomorrow's disasters. Other companies that break all the rules hit it big. Finally there is a book that offers every investor practical guidance on how to separate winners from losers. This isn't one of those play-it-safe books that tells you to look for companies so perfect you'll never find one; Professor Newton understands that you are buying Internet stocks to win big, and therefore have to take the chance of losing big. But this is also a book that takes risk seriously, and steers the reader away from the insubstantial stocks without sound business models. The book assumes nothing but some common sense, yet teaches an investment discipline that is every bit as professional as you will find anywhere on Wall Street or in Silicon Valley.

Communicating Technology: Dynamic Processes and Models for Writers Review

This book has contributed well to the professional growth of my technical writing intern. I assign her a chapter or two to read weekly, plus assignments from the writing projects at the end of each chapter. It provides an active, results-oriented training program well suited for the beginner writer.
Practical rather than overly academic, this book also includes good material for the experienced technical writer. I'm particularly impressed by the chapter on collaborative writing. It's nice to see a real-world technical communications book!
