I am well experienced in Microsoft Office Applications, specifically Office 2003. I purchased MS Office 2007 to learn new techniques of this application. For Microsoft Excel 2007, I purchased subject textbook from Course Technology. In my opinion the instructions and depth of information are rather average. Explanation of Excel 2007 features are scattered across several pages. Also, key toolbars, dialog boxes, views, tabs, etc, are not deeply explained at the beginning of the textbook, i.e., Unit A. Authors assume the reader is well versed in Excel. Good luck to a new comer who wants to start learning Excel.
I believe that once I achieve a complete knowledge on Excel 2007 with this book and other good references I should be able to comprehend the intrincacies of this application. At that time I will be back to this textbook, mainly first few Units, and perhaps re-assess my opinion.

Exploring the Internet Review

Exploring the Internet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Exploring the Internet" (2nd Edition) begins with the seemingly obligatory Internet history, but differs from the mainstream introductory Internet books by concluding each of its chapters with a variety of tests and and hands-on tasks that challenge the reader's true understanding of the concepts rather than the reader's ability to simply memorize.
Sound like a text book? It is. I was introduced to the book through an introductory Web course that is part of a Master's Degree program at Nova Southeastern University's School of Computer and Information Science. The book is one of several in the Exploring Windows series from Prentice Hall publishers. Employing a "learning by doing" concept, each of the book's chapters concludes with a multiple choice test, an "Exploring the Internet" exercise, some World Wide Web practice sessions and "Case Studies" in which the reader is asked to put his new found knowlege to some practical online use.
One of the "problems" with the book is not of the book's design, but rather a result of the Web's rapid growth. Some of the sites and URLs used in the book simply are no longer around or operable. However, the authors are aware of the problem, address it on several occasions and present such clear directions that it's easy enough to find worthwhile substitute targets.
In short, the book is more than adquate in its introduction to the Internet and Web. There's plenty for the first time visitor and quite a few tips still left over for those who already possess a good understanding of the topic.

craigslist 4 Everyone Review

craigslist 4 Everyone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had never really used Craigslist before I picked up this book so I really didn't have anything to compare it as to it's accuracy or usability. After all, a well designed Web application SHOULD be usable even without any directions, right? Well, some aren't and some are just so plain that it looks like a laundry list of everything you DIDN'T want to know about a location; or maybe everything you DID want to know but didn't know how to find.
After visiting Craigslist online I found that it is rather like looking at a laundry list, or maybe just a spreadsheet of things you may want to find about a location. But after reading this book I learned that there are lots of very useful things you can use Craigslist to find and being useful is a good thing for a Web application or it will soon no longer to on-line.
I found this book very easy to use with explanations well illustrated and no "geek-speak" to speak of. In fact, using this as my guide, I was able to find a potential client listed that I would never have found anywhere else.
So if you have ever wanted to know what all Craigslist can do for you, then pick up this easy read.

Programming in Visual Basic 6.0 Update Edition with CD
Average Reviews:

The authors start with very basic elements in the first 3 chapters: the IDE, form design, controls, properties, methods, datatypes, and variable scope, etc. But the book moves right along, by chapter 11, you're learning to access database files. The authors present the material with a very logical progression, I didn't find myself skipping around, which I had done with other books on the subject. The explanantions are concise, no boring filler here, but there are many examples of syntax and code. At the end of each chapter, a complete program is presented to bring everything together. I've attempted to learn Visual Basic with other books, but I wish I would have found this one first. It is written in a manner that anyone could understand, gives good code examples and the projects are enjoyable. I've recently started the Advanced version of this book and hope to move to the next level. I would definately recommend this book for any beginner in Visual Basic 6.

Mastering Essential Math Skills PRE-ALGEBRA CONCEPTS Review

Mastering Essential Math Skills PRE-ALGEBRA CONCEPTS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked this title up to brush up my pre-algebra skills for a college placement test and it went really fast but I gave it a low rating because the typos in this book are incredible - I can't believe an average level proof reader didn't catch the mistakes in the answers - if I were more faint of heart, I would be totally confused. The mistakes are needless - answer 9 instead of 19, n being referenced in an equation that only involved x, just silly stuff. I would not recommend this if your math skills are not pretty fresh or your confidence level strong enough so that you know the answer you got is right and the answer key has a typo almost every other page.
All in all, even with those misgivings, I was pretty impressed that my review went that quickly - knocked off the book in about 5 days of casual test reviews while watching tv. Much credit must be given to the author's simplicity of teaching methodology - putting a simple rule out there, show how it works, then ask the reader to work on several (average 17) problems on that rule. THen check yourself on the answer key and move on. The last time I did math was 40 years ago but it came back lickity split. Though I still have no clue why we needed to know all that stuff but I guess I didnt' go into a science profession but my husband who did, feels the same way. But like a good Jeopardy program, this book can be taken lightly for a quick refresher, warts and all, just to test yourself and get some understanding of where you are on pre-algebra. It doesn't hurt to stay one step ahead of my kid to keep him impressed. And its never too late to go back to college to pursue an in-demand as opposed to esoteric profession of starry eyed youth. Money pays the bills and boring but practical, in demand careers should never be underestimated.

Physics Problem Solver (Problem Solvers Solution Guides) Review

I thought the Physics Problem Solver was nothing less of miraculous! I'm a student who is learning on his own, so it often helps that after I learn a subject in physics from the book I'm using (Resnick & Halliday) I want more problems to make sure I know the material - this book fits the bill so excellently! Problems on every undergraduate aspect of physics that you can think of - starts each section with easy problems to get you into it and then gradually gets harder until an understanding of calculus is required.
In short, I think this book is excellent and I would recommend it to any physics student.

Starting Out in Futures Trading Review

Starting Out in Futures Trading
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the price this is a great book to learn and help understand the specifics that make up all the basics in trading commodity-futures. After reading this book, I felt as if I had taken a formal college course on the subject of Futures and understood it much better from various angles now. There's no "hype" in the book, no agendas, no further products or services to buy being pitched to you, just plain vanilla (ok, french vanilla) basics being laid out for you in textbook fashion for you to digest in your own terms. I like that - it's refreshing in a way. It is probably like this because it was really written 20+ years ago (don't worry, it's been revised many times to be modernized - 5th edition, 1993). The book was originally written and printed in "Commodities" magazine as a popular mini-course series (before the magazine changed it's name to the modern "Futures" magazine we know it as today). Even though I knew much of the content from personal experience (the most costly way) or from other readings, my CTA, etc, I did not always understand the "why" behind the rules I was following & how the markets work the way they do from both a technical and fundmental perspective (dynamics). Of the some 28 chapters, I really took interest in almost every one. I can't say that about most of the other trading books I've read. Put it this way... if I could keep only 5 trading books, this would be one of them. You'll likely dump more than that on the commissions for 1 trade - or, worse yet, even more than that on 1 bad trade. ** Beginners, I recommend the following: If your goal is to have deeper pockets from trading - then you must first go deeper in your understanding of futures markets & trading them (i.e. Read the book).

Kaplan SAT Math Workbook Review

Kaplan SAT Math Workbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book consists of 100 important things or remember for the SAT I Math. I was surprised how informative this book is.
I am an SAT Math I tutor, and not only did this book help me to review what I know, but also gave me the idea to plan to teach well. Each section provides certain parts to review and comes with example questions, from easy, medium, to hard questions. This is great, since the SAT I math questions are listed from easy to hard questions in each section, so the students must be prepared for easy questions to hard questions on each topic. In the back of the book, there is a list of all of 100 important topics covered in the entire book. After you finish the sections with sample questions on each topic, it would be a smart idea to copy that section and carry it around to memorize. There are also 2 practice tests at the end.
Some people has said that Kaplan is the easiest kind of review book out there. While I can't tell whether this is true or not, this book certainly covers all of what you need to know for the SAT I Math. There is no reason for this book to give hard questions. There are other books for that. This book really isn't for you to get the questions and answer them. You probably want to grab a College Board Practice Test books, or something of that sort. This book provides INFORMATION and DESCRIPTIVE explanations to questions and answers, which you absolutely need for the SAT I.
Along with this book, I use The New Math SAT Game Plan by Philip Keller, which is another excellent book to review SAT I Math. This book covers the important math topics, while The New Math SAT Game Plan covers "PLANNING" for SAT I Math and "HOW" to take the SAT I Math. I recommend both!Also- for the reviewer who posted about the seller... Please, realize what you're reviewing first. In the book review section, please only review the book. C Programming: A Modern Approach, 2nd Edition Review

C Programming: A Modern Approach, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have browsed some C and C++ books in major bookstores to see how the materials are organized and presented. This one was not a book I had a chance to browse, but one which I had to buy for an extension course (Introductory C Programming) at UCLA last summer.
At first I thought King's book was hard because of a certain depth of penetration into elements of good programming practices with examples one after another. As I became serious and started to reading intently, I found out how effective King was in paving the way toward a comprehensive understanding of C programming through worked out code and annotations. King is very skilled in breaking down and building up C code, unlike certain celebrated C programming language experts who apparently do not care to be clear or are simply ineffective. So my conclusion is: Read this each chapter of this book very closely, carefully and seriously, and try to understand every last point King is raising. Also, do not neglect working out some of his exercises at the end of each chapter for the benefit of practice as well as learning C. In almost every chapter of the book, he gives very good, organized and annotated but not tedious and complex examples. The problems are generally reasonable and hardly ever too complicated because I never found them overwhelming, either from a coding perspective or mathematically. Perhaps it is because King comes across as someone who emphasizes organization, detail, clarity and explanation in his style of presentation. There are no problems dealing with heavy scientific or engineering applications for those who dread them.
Great points: (1) Fundamentals - beginning chapters goes into detail for a solid grounding of C language basics (syntax, etc.); and (2) Pointers - excellent exposition with examples, diagrams and exercises, extremely well presented for the starters who easily get confused by what pointers in C are all about; and (3) Ideas are very well connected from chapter to chapter -- some chapters are even as great as stand-alone ones for referencing. The only problems I found were: (1) Description of struct types, which are passed by value from function to function -- implied but not clearly or succintly stated in the book (compare the description in the excellent book by Kelley and Pohl, "A Book in C"); (2) Chapter on program design, which I found to be very terse and scanty in terms of information topics about designing medium size to large C programs -- also jumps into encapsulation and C++ too soon and leaves out one too many basic ideas in C program organization -- "Look before you leap", C++ is object-oriented, and is therefore much more complex and evolved, so why do too much of C++ when one must learn basics of ANSI C well beforehand!
For some reason, I feel strongly that King is following the writing style and presentation of the classical work in C programming by Kernighan and Ritchie. He even discusses the significant contributions of Kernighan in establishing the C language as the mainstay of modern programming for all kinds of applications. There are some uncanny resemblance in style and other parallels I sense in his book. King also retains a lot of the clarity in thinking and intrinsic simplicity reflected in Kernighan and Ritchie's writing style.
Because of the lengthy chapters and reading required, this is not the best ANSI C reference book in my view. Kelley and Pohl's excellent paperback, entitled "A Book in C", does far better in that respect. However, King has more good illustrated examples in his book for the newcomer. You will like his book if you like Kernighan and Ritchie's paperback classic. In fact, King has more for you. The only caveat may be that any newcomer would be well advised to try to understand a little about C before attempting to read the book, because only afterwards does King's treatment only makes sense and becomes meaningful and stimulating. Also, it may help out considerably if one finds a good instructor to teach ANSI C in formal classroom environment using King's book here (as I did last summer at UCLA Extension).
All in all: A very good no-nonsense book for the motivated beginner in C programming.

New Perspectives on Microsoft Office Excel 2007, Comprehensive (New Perspectives (Thomson Course Technology)) Review

New Perspectives on Microsoft Office Excel 2007, Comprehensive (New Perspectives (Thomson Course Technology))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Three cheers for this book and the other Thomson/Course Technology "Comprehensive" books addressing various applications in Microsoft Office 2007 (and, earlier, in Office 2003, etc.). The books are designed for successful use (either on a self-study basis, or in formal courses) on the part of those who, starting with no prior knowledge, want to bring themselves up to a skill level corresponding to what Microsoft terms "Microsoft Certified Application Specialist." Here are some of the distinguishing features of this Excel 2007 book:
(1) The book makes effective use of color, including frequent and well annotated screen shots.
(2) The book presents material in a highly readable, step by step way. (This might be a disadvantage for fast-track users of the book who do not need or want that much "hand holding," but it does mean that just about any motivated person who works conscientiously with the book can achieve success.)
(3) Each of the 12 chapters is set in the context of a "case" providing meaningful settings within which the application potential of Excel is brought into focus, usually in a "business-related" way. (This contrasts with some books that describe "how to do this" and "how to do that," but might lack motivation for WHY it might be of interest to be able to do this or do that.) Peripheral benefit: the book provides an informal introduction to some aspects of business, in the sense of extracting information from data to provide insights and perhaps support fundamental decision making.
(4) Each chapter concludes with a set of five exercises or "cases," starting with an exercise in which the reader is asked to extend the material developed in the body of the chapter. Starting-point workbooks for these exercises (and for the case presented in the body of the chapter itself) can be downloaded from the publisher's website. Workbook "solutions" for the cases can be downloaded by instructors using the book in a course setting. (Although some of the exercises include "explore" steps, the exercises do largely tend to take a "follow the bouncing ball" approach, which helps the user ease into the material but probably falls short for fast-track users who might want to be challenged to be more creative in applying the material, i.e., "Here's a situation, and here's the information that is to be developed in this situation. Starting from scratch and using your own wits entirely, develop the information. No step by step approach is provided for your use. You're on your own. Go to it!"
(5) The book is certified by Microsoft as containing the Excel material that, when mastered, puts the user in a position to pass Microsoft's "Certified Application Specialist" exam. This certification, in turn, can be a valuable resume' entry for some people in the workforce. (Ditto for similar certifications for Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, and so on.)

(6) There is a companion book ("Casegrader," by Crews and Murphy, ISBN 978-1-4239-9823-5) consisting of twelve "cases" integrated with the Excel material presented in the corresponding chapters in the Parsons, Oja, Auer, and Carey book. After developing the workbook for a Crews and Murphy case, the workbook can be uploaded to a website for automatic scoring, with a step by step analysis and report produced as a result. (The Crews and Murphy cases fall into the "follow the bouncing ball" category, but have the virtue of forcing use of the Parsons et al. material after the material has been studied. In my opinion, Parsons et al. and Crews and Murphy are best used together in this sequence: (a) Study a Parsons et al. chapter. (b) Do the corresponding Crews and Murphy case, keeping at it until you score 100% on it. (c) Do at least two of the Parsons et al. exercises at the end of the chapter. (d) Proceed to the next Parsons et al. chapter, etc.)

All best wishes for success to users of Parsons et al.

This is a well-written, carefully organized book that belongs on desks across America! Topics covered include organizing before writing, overcoming writer's block, suiting letters to complex situations, and using grammar and punctuation properly. If I had to provide one criticism, it would only be that the book is too short! As a reader, I didn't tire of the useful sample letters and would have happily read more and more. A great reference for the tentative writer and a good refresher for seasoned writers, as well.

I can't recommend this book. She takes ten sentences to say what could be said in one. I prefer a much more straight-forward, to-the-point presentation of software. This is all flowery and verbose... If you have the time to wade through this book, it's possible that you might get something out of it. I'm online right now, looking for something that gives a leaner, cleaner, more systematic presentation of the software.
