I have been using Adobe Photoshop since version 5.5, but didnt really get into it seriously until Photoshop CS (8). When I purshcased CS, i bought Jan Kabili's "Complete Course" title, because I considered the Classroom In a Book series to be too dry and technical. It seems that most PS books are either completely tutorial based (meaning you have to follow that sample projects in order to get anything from the lessons) or a cut-and-dry reference that doesnt go too in depth on explainations. "Complete Course" was the former, a big disappointment, and I never finished it. I have since upgraded to CS2, and wanted to get THE most comprehensive and most importantly, versatile book, that would provide explainations as well as serve as a reference.
I have not been disappointed in my purchase of Adobe Photoshop CS2 Classroom in a Book. From what I have seen, the book has chapters that suit everyone, whether you have years of experience with photoshop or are a complete beginner. I am somewhere in between, but found even the most basic "beginner" chapters contain some very useful information. As the book progresses the concepts become more complex and allow you to greatly expand your knowledge of PS.
But what impressed me most about Classroom in a Book was that it can be molded to fit your learning style. Included is a CD with example files for you to follow along with each lesson, trying out features as you go. However, if you are like me and do not learn as well from following a tutorial step-by-step, you dont have to use the CD. This book is written well enough and includes plenty of color screenshots that you can do just as well without the sample files. I am about halfway through the book, feel very confident in what I learned from those lessons, and have yet to pop in the CD. Using it (at least for the first half of the book) is up to you and depends on how you like to learn.
I also purchased this book, because sometime in the not-too-distant future, I am planning to take the exam to become an Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) in Photoshop CS2. For anyone else considering taking the exam, this is the official Photoshop book. Not only is this the guide that Adobe recommends as preparation for the ACE exam, but it is also highly recommended by many of those who have taken the exam and are now certified experts in photoshop.
This book was definitely one of my best book purchases to date; I am looking forward to the release of Adobe's Classroom in a Book for GoLiveCS2!

Building Accounting Systems Using Access 2007 Review

Building Accounting Systems Using Access 2007

This book does a relative good job teaching you access. There is no accounting part. The author tries to build a database to be used as an accounting system. The database is so simple and badly desingned that I cannot extend it for a real business database. You won't see anything close to an accounting process not even a single journal or a G/L. If you want to learn access you have many other better and less expensive options.

I used this book and Dr. Sanghera's AP Biology Flashcard Quicklet to prepare for the AP Biology exam. I love both of these books and here are my reviews:
This book is cool. It's to the point and covers all the topics very concisely. So, that saves you lot of time that you can use elsewhere. However, it gives you all the info that you need to pass the AP Biology exam. It's short and sweet: material is covered in a reader-friendly way; easy to follow, understand, and retain. I used this book in combination with the following book: the Flashcard Quicklet.
AP Biology Flashcard Quicklet: Flashcards in a Book for Biology StudentsFlash cards are cool tools to review your preparation for the exam. I like this style of flash cards though: flash cards in a book. Loose flash cards could be annoying; they are hard to keep together...flash cards in a book are cool..no lost cards...easy to keep them together..Besides, in this book, the flash cards are very much self contained; good and easy to follow answers and explanations....You can use this flash card book with any AP Biology book or without any book...it's not tied to a specific book...The coverage of topics is quite comprehensive and there is lots of space to make your own notes...I love it...
I would say these are the only two books you need to pass the exam.

Chemistry (Cliffs AP) Review

I could go off and brag about how well I did on the exam and then say it was all because of this or that. I'm going to skip that and get straight down to it. It is like a formula sheet. This book is great if you understand what the equations are for. If you don't, you might consider another book. Currently I haven't found a book that contains a better description of the labs, so if you haven't had much experience in the lab before the AP test you might need this book. (BTW question 5 on free response is a lab question. It draws the questions from one of the 22 labs you were suppose to do in the course. If your school is anything like mine you won't do more than 14 or 15.) But again it is a bookl that focuses on the equations, which is silly seeing how the multiple choice section doesn't allow you to use a calculator. (Most of the questions on my test in the m.c. were concept. Those that were calculations were basic and the equations needed were so simple you'd shoot yourself if you didn't know them.) Buy the book for the labs if you need that review, otherwise don't buy it at all. In case you're curious i got a 4 on the test (i followed the crowd). It's always that equilibrium problem that gets you!

New Perspectives on Microsoft Office 2007, First Course, Windows XP Edition (New Perspectives Series) Review

New Perspectives on Microsoft Office 2007, First Course, Windows XP Edition (New Perspectives Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I myself am fairly computer literate; I am after all a computer repair tech. I also work in my local college with people that are having difficulty with computers in general. I get to see this book often.
This is a good book since it covers all the basics of the world of Microsoft Office 2007, it goes over word, excel and PowerPoint nicely.
This book also has major issues with its wording, for the college student that grew up surrounded with computers it was not that bad. However for the older, say 40+ group it is a terrible book. Directions are hard to follow and understand. I have seen students come to me needing help with some of the work the book asks them to do and I have difficulty following and understand the instructions and I have been in the computer and electronics field since 1982.
Another MAJOR FLAW with this book is that it often asks you to work on a partly started document that you can download off line. Most of the time I spend with a student trying to help them with this book often requires me to spend the first 45 minutes trying to find the file. The web site is so intent in trying to sell you the book they didn't consider if someone who owns the book is trying to get access to the data there told to. It would be better if this book came with a CD with all the data on it.
If you're an "older" person who is looking to get a book to help with gaining some computer knowledge, this is possibly the worst book you can ever get your hands on. You will find your-self frustrated and unable to do the work with out any outside help. After paying the exuberant price for a "College" book you will most likely find your self eager to either return it or to burn it.
For the college student who is told that this is your textbook, with every homework assignment, give the "Case instructions" a glance and look to see it you understand it before you leave the classroom.

Automotive Technology: A Systems Approach Review

Automotive Technology: A Systems Approach

Well i have been working on cars for 18 year, started with my uncle who was an ASE Master Tech when i was 10 helping in his shop and went from there. the only reason i bought this book was the fact that im going back to school to get my degree in Automotive Systems and Automotive Management and this book was required for Automotive Systems. - off sudject some here but it really burns me up that companies now hire more based on a degree than experience but back on topic - anyway i have to admit after looking this book over i am very amazed at just how great its writen in terms of breakdown of systems and what they do and also the fact that it explain in depth where everyone can understand with out the auther talking down to the reader. its just a simple and amazing book that i would recommend to all mechanics, future students, as well as the average person. this book would be great just for someone that doesnt want to get ripped off by mechanics that are just after that $. if you know how a system works you can save $ by 1) describing the problem better when you take it in to the shop and 2) knowing when someone is trying to sell you work on your car that is not needed. i recommend this book to everyone and i am sure glad i found it! it is simple and amazing!!

SAT II: Math Level IC (REA) -- The Best Test Prep for the SAT II (SAT PSAT ACT (College Admission) Prep)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been teaching SAT and SAT II courses professionally for around 5 years, and I can honestly say that this title was one of the least-popular and least-helpful books I have EVER used. The title (or sub-title) of the book states that this is the most comprehensive title available -- that's the problem. It's far TOO comprehensive. It includes lots and lots of information that has never been on the test, and that is very unlikely to appear on the test in the future. (If you learn EVERY word in the dictionary, you're sure to get a good verbal score on the SAT, but there are FAR more effective ways to INTELLIGENTLY improve your vocabulary!) To make matters worse, it seems to have been written BY math lovers FOR math lovers and is nearly incomprehensible to someone who's not a math lover. Hey, if you love math, then you don't need a prep book for the SAT II in the first place! The book has way too much information to absorb, the practice tests are unrealistically difficult, and there's no easy way to use only selected portions of the book (for an abbreviated prep based upon the most important concepts, for example). This book feels like a desk reference for mathematics, not a study guide.
In my classes and tutoring, I've found that the books by the big test prep companies (Princeton Review and Kaplan) are concise, accurate, and logically arranged. If forced to choose, I give the Princeton Review title a slight edge above the Kaplan book, but both are excellent titles. I suggest getting both the Princeton Review and the Kaplan titles -- compared to a prep course or college tuition, they're an amazingly inexpensive investment.
How much did I dislike this book? After reading the title, I bought a dozen of them to use with my students -- but after using it for one group of students, I ended up shipping all of the unused copies back. These criticisms apply to both the Math IC and IIC books -- I don't know about the rest of the books for the other subject tests.

Bought the book new, the reason being I feel if you buy new, everything will be there. But for some reason, no access codes in the book, on the book, or anywhere to be found around the book. Was told by my book store at my college that the code was to come with the book, I got my course Id from the college, but can't get online, also after buying this book, tried to email questions about code location, and was always told unable to reply, ALL I WANT IS THE ACCESS CODES, OTHER WISE THE BOOK IS USELESS, I WAS GIVEN ONLY THREE DAYS TO LOG IN WITH CODES OR BE DROPPED FROM CLASS. I THINK I'LL BUY MY BOOKS ON CAMPUS NEXT TIME!!!!!!!!
