(More customer reviews)I was required to take a technical writing course for my degree and this is the book we used. It did an excellent job of explaining how things should be professionally written. It covers everything from asking for a recommendation to typing a resume to typing a proper e-mail. The layout of the book makes everything very easy to learn. After every concept there are examples of what a proper document should look like and sometimes even an example of what it should not look like. At the time, I thought I would never use anything I was learning, but after only two months out of the class I find myself using it to type up my resume. If you are in a job that requires professionalism in language and writing skills then this book is a must have. You will be surprised at what you can learn.

Purpura sees loss prevention as any method by which individuals or organizations can prevent and control loss of assets, whether people, money, productivity or materials, under a variety of circumstances, including crime, fire, natural disaster, error or poor management. This broad-brush approach allow the author to address traditional physical security concerns, and also newer or less-traditional threats such as terrorism, natural disaster, workplace violence, information theft, substance abuse, and adverse legal action, to mention just a few topics.
The approach to each topic includes definitions, discussions, checklists, and questions designed to stimulate critical thinking. The text includes a nice selection of illustrations and graphics.
"Security and Loss Prevention" is an extremely useful introduction to the security business, suitable for the classroom and the workplace, and highly recommended to the teacher and the security professional.

We all have to start with the basics when training new security supervisors and officers. Here is a book that can aid greatly to the end result that we in the industry are striving for well trained and knowledgable Security Supervisors and officers. All chapters of this book can be set to lesson plan for classroom study or chapters can be assigned to all and have them answer the questions at the end of each chapters. Teaching how and when a security survey should be conducted and explaining to the client the findings and the recommendations that were found during the survey. If you have the book keep it if you do not get a copy ASAP it will only make that much prepared for the changes in the industry that will taking place today into the next century and beyond. The book is geared towards high level high school age students or college level. I am using it to teach a vocational education class in a high school. The students are 16 years or older. The book has up to date concepts, and fairly recent examples such as the Rodney King riots and the O.J. Simpson trial. In comparison to other books, this book is extremely reasonable and well worth the money.

(More customer reviews)Seller had the book shipped and delivered promptly; the day before I needed it. That was excellent timing considering I ordered it later than I should have.
My only problem with the book was the relatively high cost. This is attributed to its very recent publication date for this edition, though there is not much changed from the 8th or earlier editions. One will find the book to be somewhat useless once reading/attempting to learn from it; most articles inside are common sense or have nothing truly to do with Technical (science, engineering, math, etc) Writing but more with Business (marketing, sales pitches, stock exchange letters, useless etc) Writing.
However, the book is required for an Engineering technical writing course at a university/college, it is just a shame the book does not live up to its intended purpose. The layouts, drafts, and Intentions purposes of the book, as well as being a "stand alone MLA handbook" makes up for the fact that the author/university relation is a bit lacking.
This Seller however, did a superb job. 5 Stars all the way.

(More customer reviews)I purchased The Perfect Stage Crew after taking over the Theatre Arts class and role as Technical Director at the high school where I teach. I had little theater experience and no technical knowledge when I accepted both positions. Prior to purchasing this text, I had read numerous reviews and purchased other texts, none of which addressed the specific issues I was encountering on a daily basis - such as basic stagecraft, simple (but effective) lighting, tips for managing a crew and tricks for maintaining my sanity. The text reads easily and is well organized. Mr. Kaluta has a priceless sense of humor, and I would swear he's been backstage in my theater! I feel confident in following his advice and learning from his mistakes because he's been where I am. I have even moved away from the "textbook" for my course and started creating notes and handouts gleaned from the pointers and information in The Perfect Stage Crew. Thank you so much for writing a book on technical theater that doesn't read like an instructional manual for a vacuum cleaner and that makes me laugh out loud while nodding in agreement. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone working in high school or community theatre. It has proven invaluable to me, and I expect to return to it often over the next several years.

(More customer reviews)This book is like that first lick off a chocolate mint ice cream cone or the feel of the ocean breeze on your face ; you just gotta experience it first hand to know why I purchased over a dozen copies for every household of my nieces and nephews, friends who help their children with math homework, K-12, and to a middle school math teacher to remind him how math can be taught quite simply with meaning and enjoyment.
This book ought to be next to that dictionary in every household. It covers concepts from addition to Trigonometry in the most learner/reader friendly way. This book covers all subjects at the most practical level. You won't need to purchase books on various math topics, they're all here. And I didn't think I'd chuckle or laugh, learning about math.
Recently a math book for girls was released. What? Technical Book for Dummies doesn't perpetuate that myth about girls being less teachable or capable. This book addresses all people as learners, thus respecting all learners without indulging in gender myths.
I grew up hating and fearing math and avoided all math courses beyond basic math. This book changed everything. The difference is the humorous and patient voices of the authors. It's as though they knew they had to be delicate, uncomplicated with their language and funny to hold my attention before they could help me rid myself of past fears. This they did, without a touch of intimidation.
I highly recommend this book. You just gotta read a few pages to know why I compare this to an ice cream cone. Besides, I like authors who have confidence in their work. I've been promised that if I can't balance my check book after the chapter on checkbooks, one of the authors will personally come to my door to balance my checkbook for me. [...]
